Favorite Movie Ever (?)
I’m pursuing graduate studies in Media Studies and I feel like I’m supposed to cultivate this high-brow, artsy taste in films but I think that my favorite movie ever is…drumroll… Con Air.
Yeah, I know, I know. Seriously, Con Air? But - but — it’s pure entertainment! The whole plot is so ridiculous, it’s good. I love the cast: Nicolas Cage, John Malkovich(!), John Cusack, and, hello, Steve Buscemi!The characters they play are quirky, over-the-top, caricature-ish, and totally unrealistic. The whole film just has this fun vibe like it’s not taking itself seriously and that’s okay.
But maybe the real reason I love this movie so much is because I remember watching it with my Dad and sisters when I was a kid. It’s a throwback to that time in my life where everything was simpler and people could just sit in front of the TV and watch a movie.
I never watch Con Air on purpose. I don’t own a copy of the film. Why? Because catching in on air randomly is part of the magic. It’s a fun surprise to switch the channel and see Nic Cage say “Put the bunny back in the box.”
So there you go. I professed my wholehearted love for Con Air. Also, this is coming from a person who thoroughly enjoyed P2. Yes, that thriller/slasher movie in a building’s parking floor. I do have good taste in movies, I promise. *wink*
